The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
